Chapter 1

The War Ends Twice

18

The war ended on a morning so clear that the sentries wept at the sight of the mountains. Ninety-nine winters the Frost Gate had held, and Marshal Yeon Seol had held it for the last forty of them. When the envoys came up the pass under white banners, she counted their horses twice before she let herself believe it.

The feast that night filled the great hall with more light than it had seen in a decade. Someone had found the old lanterns. Someone else had found the old songs. Chancellor Mun rose with a cup of southern wine — his own gift, carried a thousand li for this exact evening — and toasted the Marshal who had given the realm its winters back.

She knew the taste before she had finished swallowing. Silverroot. Slow, gentle, unhurried — the poison you choose when you want a hero to die of tiredness in her sleep, mourned and out of the way. She looked across the hall at Mun and he smiled at her the way he had smiled for forty years, and she understood that he had been patient longer than most men live.

What surprised her was what she regretted. Not the dying — she had been ready for that since she was twenty-three. She regretted the letters in her camp chest, written to the families of the fallen and never sent because there was always another winter. She regretted never thanking Quartermaster Ho, who had kept them fed through the famine year and died believing she hadn't noticed. She regretted her sister's orchard, which she had promised to visit when the war ended, every year, for forty years.

The hall grew warm and far away. If I had it again, she thought, without much hope — she was a soldier, not a poet — I would do the small things first.

She woke to the sound of a bell she hadn't heard in forty years: the dawn bell of the Third Barracks at the Frost Gate, rung by a boy who would die in the spring offensive of her twenty-fifth year. Her hands, when she raised them, were smooth. Outside the window the first winter — her first winter — was beginning to snow.
