Chapter 8

What the River Keeps

18

The Gate buried its dead above the river, because the ground on the heights stayed soft under the deep snow longer than anywhere else — an old soldiers' fact, learned by digging. Eleven graves take a morning. She had known winters when the digging outlasted the light for a week.

The rite at the Frost Gate was older than the war: each name said once, loudly, facing the water, and a cup of army wine poured out for the river to carry down to the south, where the dead were from. The commander said the names. Yeon Seol stood in the second rank and let the cold work on her face and thought about the arithmetic no one else on the heights could do: eleven, against one hundred and four.

Ninety-three soldiers were eating breakfast this morning who had been under the river-stones for forty years. One of them had already been shouting at recruits in the yard, getting the drill wrong. She had decided not to correct him until spring. There was time. That was the whole of what she had been given, and standing above the water she finally understood the size of it: there was time.

The river took the wine and the names and went south with them, the way it always had, the way it would for a hundred winters more. She walked down from the heights making the next list.
